8:30 Trucks and trailers pulled into the racer's parking. Many standardbreds were unloaded and put in the holding stalls. Groomers rushed around filling water and checking the bedding. Today was the big day, first race day of the season.

9:30 The 2 year-old trotters were first out. The half mile track was freshly grated and was in great condition for today's events. For the normal races, they would have to go around twice for the mile. The race was over in a matter of minutes, but it was close. A small filly took the victory.

10:00 A youth camp was being held for eight 10-12 year-olds. The kids race was held today, four going out at a time and it was only a half mile race since the horses had to do it twice. The parents cheered wildly well betters and other viewers went off to buy snacks and drinks. The race ended quickly, no one really knows who won.

10:30 The 2 year old pacers entered the track next. From start to finish, it was a fast paced race. The leader stayed in front the whole time and won by 5 strides. Cheers roared up from the crowd as betters won money and owners saw their horses place.

11:00 The youth camp's second batch went for a go. As parents watched, again the others went off to see standings and the schedule. There was excited chatter started up. In an hour the 3 year-old pacers would own the track. The camp's race was again, lame, but a boy from a small town claimed the win and it was over.

11:30 The 3 year old trotters entered the track. With a fast pace around the first turn, a horse broke out into a canter and was disqualified. The race kept going as the horse slowed and turned off the track. Many betters were hoping on the horse to win. Angry and upset sighs and groans echoed through the stadium. A large black stallion won instead.

11:45 The stands grew loud as the 3 year-old pacers race drew closer. Many went to go get lunch so they wouldn't missed the big race. The horses in the stall even seemed frantic and jittery. Groomers brought out the racers to start tacking them up as the jockies got ready. The crowd grew restless and betters muttered to each other in line. "I heard the Moon Glory has a good chance in that field of stallions." "Well the new one, White Amazon, I hear he has a strong hold and lots of speed." "Well my bet is for Kartikay, he has had more experience then the others."

12:00 The horses stepped onto the track and a cheer roared up. They all started to slow pace around the opposite way to warm up. The jockies placed their goggles on and turned the horses around as the starting gate truck passed. The speed picked up as they all line up behind the truck's long arms.The rounded the corner and was at the starting line quickly. Then truck raised it's arms up and sped out of the way. [i]"And the race is on!"[/u] the announcer said in excitement.

Sam held Amazon back as the gelding pushed forward. His white coat stuck out against the other's darker coats. This was his first race and Amazon was excited. He pulled the bit, trying to release himself from the hold on, so he could pull ahead of the others.

Storm Shadow burst forward trying to get an early lead. Safania held tight, not letting the eager young mare use all her energy. She was fast, but she had close to no stamina going full force. Safania was worried. Her original plan was to pull up to 3rd, but most of the horses were running a blistering fast pace. Moon Shadow pulled, and pulled on the bit, she didn't want to be in 4th place, Saf knew, but she couldn't afford to use all Moon's energy. Saf looked at the gray gelding close to 2nd. She could tell he didn't want to be on such a snug hold his rider was giving him. Moon was the same way. She was shaking her small head furiously. Saf let her go another notch.

Erik held tight to the reigns of his big stallion who was pacing quickly. Kartikay sat a head behind the only filly in the race. Erik was relaxed on his sulky. The wheels of the sulky were nearly soundless as they spun. Erik watched the horses ahead of him.

Amazon pushed into the bit, his pace getting quicker, but in shorter steps. Sam flustered, his face tinging red with frustration. Amazon had never done this before, not even in practice races. Sam released the reins and Amazon burst forward. Sam took another hard hold and Amazon cooled down, accepting that he was not getting free. They were in a close second, about a head away from the leader's nose. Sam turned slowly on his sulky to see the others. They were close behind, but he still had a good chance for a large lead if Amazon played it right.

Saf slowly released the reigns because Shadow wanted more and she wouldn't give if she didn't get it. She slowly moved up on a big stallion in front of her. Saf wore a grim look on her face. We'll never win if Shadow keeps this up! She thought sadly. She didn't care anymore, they were almost to the homestretch. Shadow burst forward trying to be leader yet again. Saf was taken by surprise. Shadow had the bit and wouldn't let it go! She was moving forward fast, and their was nothing Safania could do to stop her! Oh no, this isn't good! She thought. She worked at the bit, not looking at the horse and rider now next to her and slowly moving behind her. Saf sighed and gave up. If she made her bid now, their was NO way she'd win. Or was their?..

Erik was unsettled about the quick pace of the race so early on. He kept tight to the reins and his horse stayed with him. There was probably five-eighths of a mile left to go and he needed to stay slow. He was soon in sixth with not much pressure from the remaining horses behind him. Erik looked grimly to the five horses ahead of him.

Saf finally got the bit after a few minutes of working it from Moon's teeth. Moon started shaking her head again, but not as badly this time. The race was coming to an end quick and Saf wasn't even in 2nd place. She wanted so badly to let her filly burst away from these horses like she had on the training track so long ago. Saf let go yet another notch, feeling the energy still stored inside Moon. She could still make a small bid on the homestretch. She was closing in on the second place horse and rider. She might over take them by the end of the race. Moon's head was now by the second place riders left wheel.

Pushing forward, Sam let amazon pass 1st place and lead the way by a stride or so. The 3rd place filly was gaining up on the two leaders so Sam had to make his move soon as they rounded the corner, or else the filly may catch up and pass last second. There was also the strong holder of 6th place, who had a steady pace and looked not even a bit tired.

As the field hit the the three-quarter mile mark Erik flicked his whip to encourage Kartkiay forward. The stallion reacted like a professional. He increased his speed without breaking pace. He creeped up on and passed the fifth and fourth place horses. He was a length behind the filly in third but it was closing.

Saf let Shadow Moon go. She didn't care as long as they got at list 3rd place. She was surprised when Moon burst forward, and didn't break pace. Not a drop of sweat was on Moon's neck or body as her muscles and legs worked hard to gain on the uniquely colored Standardbred in 1st place so far. Moon snorted and pushed her head forward. Her stride ever growing. Her legs pulling the race track fast under her. Safania almost fell backwards. She was surprised Moon had this much energy remaining in her. She would have been lazing about on the training track at home if she had been going this fast for so long. Maybe she does have the stamina for races like this, and she's been playing me all along! Moon passed the 2nd place horse, and was going after the gelding, now a few lengths ahead. All the horses on the track seemed to be breaking a sweat now. Amazon was fighting for 1st just like all the other horses on the track, he was just being a bit more successful than the others. Moon fought for 1st along side Amazon. It was going to be close, and Moon would probably end up in 2nd or 1st. Saf wasn't even paying attention to the big stallion coming up fast.

Sam then saw the filly catch to them, almos running side by side, he released amazon and felt his powerful legs speed up in a frantic. Then he pull the ear plugs out and snapped the whip. "Alright amazon let's go! for the win!" He yelled now that his horse coukd hear him. The pair streaked forward, so caught up in the adrenaline that Sam didn't even look to see where the others were at. All he saw was the finish line coming closer and closer and the crowd roaring with cheers.

Erik ground his teeth as he urged his big horse forward. The filly and the grey were fighting hard for the lead. Erik and Kartikay passed the third place horse and advanced on the lead. They sat just off the leaders. The two ahead of them were going really fast and Erik did not know if Kartikay had the stamina catch them.

Moon Shadow neighed loudly, as if she was glad the gelding was setting a good challenge. She went along with the gray gelding, not loosing ground, but gaining. They were almost side by side, and Moon wouldn't give up that easily. She pushed, and pushed, desperately wanting the lead. She wouldn't give up, not until the white wire was behind her, along with the gray gelding. Her eyes narrowed, her body ached, her breath fast and short, her legs stretched, and her coat glistened beautifully with sweat. The sun bore down on the leaders of the race. Saf turned in her seat to look back at the big stallion also working for lead. She knew Moon had a big challenge ahead of her, and she would gladly accept it until that wire was behind her along with all the other horses of this race. Saf and Moon knew Amazon was going his full speed, and Moon was too. One of them would win, but no one would know who until the results were in.

Erik make quick galnces to the other horses as he and Kartikay moved up on them. Soon the three horses were all in a line with the grey holding the rail. The wire was closing in on the three who were struggling against one another. Close was not the appropriate word for the finish that was ascending.

Moon Shadow leaped once, she was right between the two male horses. She was getting nervous, and she leaped again. She was trying to get away from the close horses. She was stretched out as best she could be. She was attempting to pull away from the other two horses, not to win, but to get away. She was breathing hard, all 3 of the leaders were. They all sped up as the big stallion moved up on them. Saf didn't have control of her horse anymore, so she just let her go. She grasped the bit hard between her teeth. She was in control.
